Geomag (other product): purchased Nov 9, shipped from UK, arrived Nov 27
CMS product (this one): purchased Nov 21, shipped from US, arrived Nov 27
Similarities:
- both brands are exactly (and I mean *exactly*) the same build quality. Excellent build. Balls are stainless steel. Rods are plastic with neodymium magnets on ends.
Differences:
- (only) under close observation, the only visible difference I see is the minute branding etching/numbers on the rods, and more importantly, the length of these. CMS has rods about an inch long. Geomag's were slightly over 2 inches, if I recall correctly. In my case, I found having two sets of different length actually adds versatility, but arguably with the ones from CMS, you could stick two or more rods together to add length. Also, the longer length of the Geomag rods leads to greater overall structures which are somewhat more easily "crushed" by just own weight. The smaller pieces in the CMS product call for smaller structures (higher magnet density per unit volume) and hence are more stable structures. On the downside, though, you need comparably more pieces to attain the same size of a structure.
I had intended this product for my toddler boy. I cannot realistically see him playing with this until he is older (maybe 5?). He would definitely like the toy at first (he is aged 3) but I can see all the small pieces scattered around the house (the steel balls, especially, do have a tendency to scatter) and/or showing to his 1-year-old sister, who might take the pieces to her mouth.
I would definitely recommend going for a set of over 100 pieces, unless you are just wanting these for a desk/office toy.
From what I've read, this happened to other buyers: the dads end up playing with the toy. But it is worth the money, and eventually, I'll learn to share with my son, as he grows into these.
Two 156pc sets are still not enough to build a 64 tetrahedron grid. And finishing the sticks of the second box there are still balls left in the first one.
I will probably get a third one some time.
GEOMAG 30-PC STARTER SET: Comes with 13 rods, 16 spheres, and 1 plastic platform. The rods are about 2 1/4" long. It comes with visual instructions for making 9 different sculptures, but 8 of the sculptures require more rods/spheres than are included in the set. With this set alone, there aren't many things you can build. The plastic platform is not very useful at all. The strength of the magnets is excellent. The spheres are steel, the rods are yellow and orange. It comes packed in cellophane in a thin cardboard box, not really good for storing the set once it's opened.
CVS MAGNETICS 108-PC BUILDING SET: Comes with 66 rods and 42 spheres. The rods are about 1" long. It does not come with any instructions. The strength of the magnets is excellent. The spheres are steel, the rods are red and blue. It comes packed in a fitted case with storage for each rod and sphere, very good for keeping the set organized.
PLAYTIME: The rods in the GEOMAG set were longer, but 2 of the CVS rods coupled with 1 sphere were about the same size as a GEOMAG rod, so we could easily mix them together. So, with the CVS set we could make 33 rods of the same size as the rods in the GEOMAG set. If you buy the 30-PC GEOMAG set, I'd recommend you buy other sets to go with it because there's not much you can build with only 30 pieces. The 108-PC CVS set provided many more building options. One thing we discovered is that if you try to make your sculptures too big, they became very unstable. The 1" rods seemed to hold out longer.
END RESULT: We'd recommend the CVS set because the storage case is awesome, and the smaller rods add to the stability of the structure you're building (and help keep the kids from becoming frustrated when it keeps falling).
